Course overview

This module is for Practitioners who wish to attain competency within the field of breast ultrasound. Students should have regular access to a breast imaging department and participate in weekly breast ultrasound clinics.

Career Benefits

Upon successful completion of this module and the Clinical Breast Evaluation (AHP_7_119) module, the student will be able to perform breast ultrasound examinations within breast symptomatic and assessment clinics. 

 

Assessment

  • Element 1 - Clinical portfolio
  • Element 2 - Online exam

Both elements of assessment must be passed to pass this module. 

 

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:   

  • Apply the knowledge and understanding underpinning the practice of ultrasound breast examinations as specified in the RCR US training recommendations (2012).

Intellectual skills:

  • Reflect critically and correlate ultrasound findings with clinical assessment outcomes and other processes of the triple assessment of breast clinic patients.

Practical Skills:

  • Competently perform breast ultrasound examinations whilst producing an accurate record of the examination and outcome.
  • Competently gain the patient’s consent and develop the communication skills to support the patient’s psychological requirements.

Transferable skills:

  • Engage confidently in academic and professional communication with others.
  • Engage in reflective practice.

Prerequisites

  • Hold a recognised qualification within the field of ultrasound (general, obstetrics or gynaecology).
  • Students should be Practitioners eligible for registration and working in areas where they can obtain appropriate practical experience.
  • Student support for studying at Masters level is to be discussed with the pathway advisor. Students who have not previously undertaken study at academic Level 7 (Masters level) are advised to consider the workshop: Preparation for Masters Level Study, which can be found on the CPPD prospectus.
