Care of the Deteriorating Adult Patient

Course overview

Early recognition, treatment and escalation improves survival rates of the adult patient. This module will provide the student with the essential skills and confidence to recognize and manage deteriorating patients. The module is delivered utilizing the A-G assessment method, also included in the module are early warning scoring systems, underlying anatomy and physiological principles, and effective communication strategies to ensure early treatment and escalation.

Career Benefits

This module will assist Registered Nurses (Adult) to develop a greater understanding of caring for an adult patient who is showing signs of deterioration. Using current and contemporary policies and procedures you will be guided to develop your patient assessment and management skills. These key skills will assist in developing you as a practitioner who seeks promotion in their clinical area.

The module uses a range of teaching methods and will thus enable you to also develop a range of transferrable key skills in relation to information technology an e-learning.

  • Element 1 - Mock clinical scenario/OSCE. 
  • Element 2 - Competency document

Both components must be passed to pass module.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding: 

  • Discuss the anatomy and physiology of the major systems, and apply these to the changes that may occur in the deteriorating patient
  • Understand and demonstrate the steps within the A-G model of assessment of the acutely ill adult patient

Practical Skills:

  • Undertake an accurate assessment of an acutely ill adult using a structured approach, demonstrating the ability to recognise deterioration and communicate their findings effectively to the inter professional team
  • Demonstrate competence in communication and escalation(where appropriate) of the assessment to other multi-disciplinary team members
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and prioritise care appropriately in order to stabilise the patient or support them in a peaceful death

Transferable skills:

  • Initiate effective collaboration and team work with the multi-professional team and contribute to the clinical decision making process
  • Appraise literature
  • IT skills development

Prerequisites

  • 120 credits at Level 5 or equivalent, registration with the NMC or HCPC. Working in a clinical area with exposure to deteriorating patients. All applicants need to identify a mentor to complete clinical competences. It is advisable that all applicants should have completed an ILS course within the past year.
