Course overview
Respiratory disease is responsible for an enormous amount of acute and chronic ill-health with more people consulting their GP for respiratory problems than any other group of diseases. This course aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to enable them to assess the holistic needs of the patient with chronic respiratory disease, to deliver appropriate nursing care and to support patients in maximising function and maintaining quality of life.

This module seeks to provide practitioners with opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge to offer evidence based care, through analysis of best and current practice. Emphasis is place on interprofessional working practices across professional boundaries to encourage shared expertise for best outcomes. Practical skills such as understanding clinical data and offering appropriate management options will be enhanced. The ability to effectively manage risk factors and the ongoing care of the common chronic respiratory conditions will be skills required of practitioners working in Primary and secondary care.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding:
- The student will have the underpinning care rationale and the knowledge of the conditions/ issues related to the specialist area of practice and the interface between different healthcare professionals.
- Gain an understanding of how government policy and initiatives impact on and relate to clinical practice in relation to patient safety, clinical effectiveness, and patient experience.
Intellectual skills:
- The student will demonstrate research awareness and an ability to critically analyse evidence based practice as related to the area of practice.
- The student will develop skills of critical thinking and an ability to reflect on practice.
Practical Skills:
- The student will demonstrate the ability to perform and interpret a variety of assessment and diagnostic tests related to respiratory assessment to guide and facilitate patient –centred approach to care.
- Be able to effectively search and use appropriate and evidence based local, national and international resources to underpin practice.
Transferable skills:
- The student will demonstrate the ability to work effectively within an Interdisciplinary and interagency forum.
- Demonstrate independent learning ability required for continuous professional development including: IT skills, literature searching skills, and reviewing skills.
