Course overview

PARTERSHIP MODULE LSBU/ BARTS HEALTH NHS TRUST  

 

This module has been developed for nursing staff working in level 1 & 2 PCCU ward setting, ambulatory care and A&E. The aim is to develop the local paediatric workforce, enabling the prompt and accurate assessment of the critically ill child.

 

Aims

This programme aims to develop the skills set and knowledge base required for children’s nurses to systematically assess, recognise and initiate stabilisation/ treatment of the critically ill child in the level 1 & 2 setting.

  • It aims to encourage students’ reflective practice, evaluation of care, critical thinking and effective crisis resource management skills.
  • The learner will develop a knowledge base regarding anatomy and physiology, aetiology and pathophysiology of some of the most common critical conditions seen in the level 1 & 2 setting.
  • The learner will develop skills and knowledge required for stabilising a critically ill child (equipment use and the pharmacology of emergency medication).
  • Throughout the programme the escalation and roles and responsibilities of other team members and that of the learner will be explored and examined when managing a critically ill child in the level 1 & 2 setting.

Skills Competency Framework

These competencies have been devised following guidance from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and are based on the RCPCH Children’s Critical Care Passport (Time to Move On, 2015) as well as the Healthy London Partnership CYP programme: paediatric critical care (Level 1 & 2) Standards.

  • Demonstrate clinical skills including assessment, prioritisation and Page 3 of 6 communication · critically reflect on own clinical practice.

  • Effective and collaborative teamwork alongside the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Decision making and problem-solving skills in the management of children in high dependency care.

  • This course is only be available for applicants within the North Thames Paediatric Network region.
  • Qualified Nurse in continuous clinical practice within a Paediatric setting for at least 12 months and has completed the MAIPP course or equivalent.
