This work-based learning module enables students to gain academic credits for continuing professional development undertaken in their workplace. It is specifically designed to complement courses completed within the workplace.

The module aims to support the development of higher-level academic skills at level 4, to develop critical reflective practices, and the ability to develop a critical understanding of the contemporary evidence base and application to practice. Students are expected to submit a portfolio of evidence and a critical reflection.

• allow students to develop knowledge in their area of choice.
• enable students to link theory to practice.
• introduce reflection as a tool to develop their skills and understand their own learning needs.

Career Benefits

This module is suitable for those who are currently working within a health and social care setting and wish to gain academic credit for CPD activities undertaken within the workplace. This level 4 module encourages confidence in the ability to study at a higher level and enables participants to undertake a structured piece of work-based learning enhancing the ability to maximise learning from a work experience. It will enhance personal development and the ability to reflection on learning experiences.

Assessment

Formative assessment: Monday 10th November 2025

Part 1

A short (500 words) written reflection;

‘Using a model of reflection, write a brief reflection on your learning so far. How have you used the evidence base to guide your practice?” This brief reflection should provide academic references in Harvard style.

Part 2

Provide a portfolio plan (using the template provided, and available on Moodle), showing how you will demonstrate 150 hours of self-directed study.

Summative assessment: Monday 19th January 2026

CW1: A portfolio evidencing the 150 hours of self-directed study in the chosen area relevant to the student’s place of work.

50% Weighting- 40% pass mark at L4

CW2: A 2000-word critical reflection which evidences the student’s ability to learn and apply the chosen area of learning to the environment in which they are employed.
