Cardiac Critical Care

Course overview

In this module students explore core critical care topics in relation to the acutely ill cardiac patient. Content includes invasive and non-invasive ventilation, cardiac monitoring, rhythm management, pacing, and circulatory support.  These are considered in the context of underlying pathophysiology, and the experience of patient and family. The course aims to develop safe, effective and evidence-based practice relevant to a range of settings including acute wards, coronary care units, high dependency areas, and cardiac catheter laboratories.  The module can be taken as an option in the MSc Nursing (Cardiac Care) and MSc Nursing.

Career Benefits

This module gives practitioners the support and direction needed to develop specialist skills in the care of people with heart disease. It also equips individuals with the research and critical thinking skills needed to advance nursing practice, as proposed by NHS policies including the Five Year Forward View (NHS, 2014) and Clinical Academic Careers Framework (Health Education England, 2015). 


Individuals who complete the module will be better placed to progress their career within cardiac nursing, and will develop transferable skills that will be attractive to future employers.  The completion of specialist clinical modules is often a prerequisite for promotion, and is a key component of educational pathways leading to advanced clinical practice.

  • Element 1 - Practice Assessment Document
  • Element 2 - 3000 words assignment

Both elements of assessment must be passed to pass this module.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:   

  • To gain a critical understanding the underpinning care rationale and the knowledge of the conditions/ issues related to delivery of cardiac critical care practice and the interface between different healthcare professional
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding how government policy and initiatives impact on and relate to clinical practice in relation to patient safety, clinical effectiveness, and patient experience

Intellectual skills:

  • Critically analyse theoretical, research and evidence based practice as related to the area of anaesthesia
  • To utilise clinical reasoning skills and problem solving in reflecting on practice

Practical Skills:

  • Demonstrate competence as outlined in the assessment document in providing safe and high quality care to a range of patients peri-operatively 

Transferable skills:

  • Take a proactive approach working effectively within an interdisciplinary and interagency forum
  • To communicate effectively and utilising a number of strategies/techniques and approaches in care situations utilising IT skills
  • Demonstrate self- awareness and work independently

Prerequisites

  • Registered Healthcare professional with a minimum of one-year experience within the cardiac setting.
  • Applicants must identify a mentor to assess them on the competency pack, prior to starting the module.
  • Student support for studying at Masters level is to be discussed with the pathway advisor. Students who have not previously undertaken study at academic Level 7 (Masters level) are advised to access the library Workshops.
