Course overview

This module explores the theory and practicality of care for patients undergoing interventional radiology procedures.


Aim

This module aims to provide participants with an advanced understanding of pre, intra and post procedure care of the patient undergoing an Interventional Radiology procedure. Participants will be able to critically apply the concepts into clinical setting.


Assessment

Formative assessment:
500-word draft of case study
Summative assessment:
CW:- 2000-word case study OR 15 -minute podcast presenting case study
50% pass mark
100% weighting


Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth critical understanding of sterile technique.
  • Explain and analyse the fundamentals of pharmacology including anaesthetics, sedation and pain management and their application within interventional clinical setting.
  • Critical understanding and discussion for the justification and application of pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care checks.

Intellectual Skills:

  • Critically analyse and judge the need for and application of patient informed consent, pain management and care assessments following professional guidance.

Practical Skills:

  • Development of an advanced critical understanding of patient care that can be applied to the candidates practice with pre, intra and post procedural care.

Transferable Skills:

  • Propose and evaluate suitable methods of care at each stage of the service user's diagnosis and treatment pathway through interventional radiology.
