Course overview

This module is designed to facilitate the nurse to become a competent and knowledgeable practitioner in planning and implementing care for orthopaedic patients undergoing both elective and trauma orthopaedic care. The module aims to build upon the knowledge and skills developed in the Principles of Orthopaedic Care module. The teaching examines the care of patients with a wide range of orthopaedic disorders covering the whole life span. The module has been developed in conjunction with the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Trust, Stanmore.


Available as a standalone module: Yes, however it is recommended that students successfully complete the 'Principles of Orthopaedic Care' module at or level 7 (HAN_7_011) before applying for this module. You can find and apply for the 'Principles of Orthopaedic Care' modules via the CPPD prospectus.

This module seeks to provide focus and direction for practitioners who wish to develop their skills and expertise in relation to orthopaedic nursing across the age spectrum. The module aims to enable an individual practitioner to have broader competence skills to progress in a direction that meets workforce development, meeting the needs of the future NHS as outlines in the Five Year Forward View in 2014 by the Department of Health (DH, 2014) and the HEE agenda for Clinical Academic Careers Framework (HEE 2015).

Encompasses multi-professional working and a sharing of expertise and skills across traditional professional boundaries and fields as new services and roles are being developed to meet current and future challenges for pre-and post-operative service delivery. Completion of this module should help the practitioner to be in a better position to progress in their career and to work in orthopaedic settings.

  • Element 1 - Competence Document 
  • Element 2 - 3000 word assignment

Both elements of assessment must be passed to pass this module.

  • Synthesise, evaluate and review appropriately policy, guidance and evidence in orthopaedic practice.

  • Further develop and modify their problem solving and decision making skills in complex orthopaedic settings.

  • Evaluate complex judgements underpinned by evidenced based care.

Prerequisites

  • 120 credits at Level 5 or equivalent.
  • At least a second class honours degree or recent successful level 6 study.
  • Registration on a Professional Register.
  • A minimum of 12 months' post registration experience (of which 6 months must be in a related area of practice).
  • It is recommended, but not essential, that you have completed the  'Principles of Orthopaedic Care' module first.
