Course overview

This module is to enable Practitioners to become competent in performing image guided breast interventional procedures within a breast clinic, relevant to their work-place needs and individual scope of practice.


Aims

  • Enable Practitioners to perform interventional procedures according to local and national guidelines.
  • Provides Practitioners with the knowledge and skills to perform breast interventional procedures safely and accurately.

  • CW1: Option 1 - poster presentation or Option 2 - case study

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:     

  • Apply the knowledge and understanding underpinning the practice of image guided interventional breast examinations.

Intellectual skills:

  • Reflect critically and correlate biopsy findings with clinical assessment outcomes and other processes of the triple assessment of breast clinic patients.

Practical Skills:

  • Competently perform interventional procedures whilst producing an accurate record of the examination and outcome.
  • Competently gain the patient’s consent and develop the communication skills to support the patient’s psychological requirements.
  • Administration of local anaesthesia.

Transferable skills:

  • Engage confidently in academic and professional communication with others and engage in reflective practice.

Prerequisites

For US guided intervention only

  • If the prospective student is not an already qualified ultrasonographer they will need to study the 60-credit Breast Ultrasound (AHP_7_073) module before they can undertake this module.
  • If already qualified as an ultrasonographer, then it is possible to study the 40-credit Breast Ultrasound for Ultrasonographers module (AHP_7_074) and this module simultaneously.
  • Prospective students may have studied a similar breast ultrasound module at another institution previously.
