Course overview

The program targets early-career professionals with less than three years of full-time teaching experience and those lacking formal teaching qualifications or a Descriptor 2 fellowship. It aims to cultivate contemporary knowledge, skills, and practices pertinent to the UK's higher education sector. Emphasizing student-centered and inclusive teaching, learning, and assessment strategies, the program draws on current educational and pedagogic research to bolster participants' professional and academic growth. Consequently, the course is structured to establish the foundational engagement required to meet the PSF 2023 required for Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). 


Critical elements include the observation in module 1, the BRP, reflective writing assignments, and active involvement in curriculum and research design, pedagogical efficacy, and inclusivity in professional practice, all of which are integral to the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. 


Important to note:

  • To achieve the PGCert course award, participants must complete three core modules. Course participants will study modules 1 and 2, by taking one module per semester whilst module 3 will be taught over a 12-month period providing a core reflexive ‘spine’ to the programme:
  1. Becoming a Reflective Pedagogue (20 credits)
  2. Evaluating the Feedback and Assessment Process (20 credits)
  3. Developing Practitioners’ Enquiry (20 credits)
  • All course participants must be able to attend sessions and complete course relevant tasks on Tuesdays. In order to ensure availability there will be an allocation of hours recognised in the participants’ workload.

Learning Objectives:

The course has the following learning objectives: 

  • To reflect critically on aspects of inclusive and effective professional practice in assessment and feedback, quality assurance and curriculum development
  • To synthesise links between theory and practice effectively and authoritatively 
  • To articulate learning clearly and logically in all formative and summative forms assessment, complying with conventions of academic writing 
  • To demonstrate evidence towards all dimensions of PSF (2023) through all summative forms of assessment

  • The PGCert is modular, thus allowing participation over a time-scale that best fits with other personal and professional commitments.
  • It contains introductory and on-going workshops.
  • There are three modules and two assessments per module.
  • The scholarly, critically reflective practitioner model lies at the core of the course.

Prerequisites

  • Hold an undergraduate degree which is considered comparable to a UK honours degree, in any subject, and from an institution acceptable to the university. 
  • Be currently practicing supporting learning or professional practice on a full-time or part-time basis. 
  • You will need to be confident with online learning, including accessing and engaging with materials on Moodle and confident working in basic programs such as Word and Excel. Enrolment takes place online. You will be contacted by email with clear enrolment instructions, including a pre-assessment. 
  • Once enrolled on wozzard you will receive more detailed information about each individual module. Your attendance is expected for all sessions and engagement in key tasks as instructed by the course leader and module leader.
