Course overview
Thank you for your interest in the non-medical prescribing module. Attendance dates are given for each cohort above and please note full attendance is mandatory. In addition, students need to complete 90 clinical hours of practice, of which a minimum of 30 hours are to be spent working directly with the Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP).This level 6 module is open ONLY to practitioners who have undertaken level 6 V300 at LSBU in the last 12 months who need to re-do the module. New standalone applicants will not be offered a level 6 place.
Overview
This is short professional module validated by the Nursing Midwifery Council. It prepares qualified nurses and midwives for independent prescribing.
The module is delivered in one induction day plus 12 study days (with an additional two half-days for exams). Teaching days are 9am-4pm, requiring full attendance and all students are required to undertake an additional 10 blended learning days (not timetabled).The proportion of online to onsite attendance will vary between cohorts, but we monitor full attendance for both. In addition, applicants may find it beneficial to complete a health assessment module prior to undertaking the non-medical prescribing programme, for example, advanced assessment skills for clinical practice.
Please note, the deadline for each cohort is 4 weeks before the first day. Applications go to the employer/sponsor on submission, and reach LSBU only after the employer has confirmed sponsorship within the application. Applications must arrive at LSBU at least 4 weeks prior to the start of the module.

Prerequisites
- Registration with the Nursing Midwifery Council.
- At least 12 months post registration within the UK, prior to applying, as a nurse or midwife in the field in which you will be prescribing.
- The ability to study at Level 6.
- An identified need for prescribing within your specified clinical practice.
- Support from your employing organisation.
- An identified prescribing clinician willing to act as clinical facilitator – Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP).
- Your DPP must be a doctor or an independent prescriber who has been prescribing for a minimum of 3 years. They must be currently actively prescribing and must be able to supervise you over the 6 months.
- Working clinically for a minimum of 25 hours a week in healthcare.
- If you are self-employed, you need to show in your application how you intend to prescribe. You need to have at least one year’s experience in the field in which you intend to prescribe (see above criteria). There needs to be an identified need for prescribing in your current practice. This needs to be verified by the manager / lead in the area in which you work.
