Course overview

The Strategic Leadership in Health Care program empowers healthcare professionals to develop leadership skills for enhanced service delivery. It emphasizes strategic thinking, collaboration, and the application of leadership theories to practice. The program equips students with the knowledge and abilities to lead teams, improve quality, and reduce costs in healthcare settings.


The Strategic Leadership in Health Care (Level 7) program is designed to develop clinical leadership skills to improve the quality and cost effectiveness of healthcare delivery. It emphasizes a strategic approach to operating within a complex system, inspiring, supporting, and teaching others, and leading teams. The program aims to:

  • Enable students to critically evaluate major leadership theories.
  • Enable students to reflect on the relationship between leadership and management.
  • Enable students to understand the role of strategic leadership in improving quality and cost effectiveness.
  • Encourage students to apply leadership theory to day-to-day healthcare practice.
  • Equip students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to develop leadership behaviors in current roles and prepare for future leadership roles.
  • Encourage students to reflect on their leadership style and experience within the context of their role and organization and to develop self-knowledge.

Our Central London facilities provide an ideal environment for clinical skills development and simulation learning. The skills laboratories and lecture rooms are equipped for teaching a variety of skills in a safe environment, allowing participants to develop high levels of competence and confidence under close supervision.

We offer programmes for all levels of healthcare staff. From study days and foundation degrees for staff working in bands 1-4, through to top-up degrees, specialist modules, Master's programmes and professional doctorates for a variety of healthcare professionals.

Undertaking CPD at LSBU means learning from experts with excellent knowledge and clinical skills in their area of speciality. Many of our academic staff hold joint posts between LSBU and some of London's most prestigious hospitals and healthcare services.

Prerequisites

  • Successful applicants will normally hold at least a second class Honours degree in a health related subject and a health related professional qualification.
  • Experience in a leadership role or experience of leading a team is desirable.
