Course overview

This is a MA Top-Up course following a successful completion of the Pg Cert and Pg Dip study pathways validated by the LSBU. The course allows the individuals to form foundations and provide an evolution in their knowledge related to spiritual and pastoral care within Healthcare Chaplaincy context. This will include an understanding of the specific contexts and themes that may emerge within a community.

The course will be appropriate for those who are already chaplains but wish to enhance their knowledge, skills, and practice further to increase their learning and promote their professional recognition and widen their employment opportunities to 7 Healthcare Chaplaincy in managerial, consultancy and specialized roles.


Likewise, other healthcare professionals and students in fields such as social healthcare, clinical psychology and medicine can also access this course to develop their spiritual and religious competences as part of their required multi-cultural competences for effective and ethical delivery of their services.


This is a one-year part-time course from September to August and it does not require students to do a dissertation but rather to complete a work-based portfolio to qualify for the MA award.

Prerequisites

Applicants will be considered on an individual basis but must meet the following entry requirements before being considered for admission:

Prospective candidates must: 

  1. Have successfully completed the Pg Dip in Healthcare Chaplaincy and Wellbeing offered as part of the GSTT/LSBU collaboration
  2. The candidate must be eligible to be registered with The Council for Professional Chaplains and Pastoral Carers (the Council). This includes to show a recognized status as a member or observant with a mainstream Faith Community or Belief Group. A mainstream faith community or belief group are those recognized by the Network for Pastoral, Spiritual and Religious Care in Health (NPSRCH) or Churches Together in England (CTE) or the Free Churches Group (FCG). Evidence to be provided.
  3. Providing a clear enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Scheme) with POCA (Protection of Children Act) & POVA (Protection of Vulnerable Adults) for hospital placement purposes.
  4. Show evidence of working in the context of Health Care Chaplaincy either in a paid role or having an ‘honorary contract’ in place.
